FAQS: DIY CLASSES FOR NON-HAIRSTYLISTS
THE DIY CLASSES
I want to cut bangs and layers! Which class should I take first?
I start every haircut with the bangs and it takes up about 50% of my haircutting time. The bangs are the entire front of your hair, whether they go all the way to your chin or whether they are above your eyebrows - this is the hair that frames your face. This is the first class you should take. If you are trying to choose between either class or plan to take both, always start with the bangs.
If you feel you don't need updated bangs at all and you are more interested in lifting your layers up and removing weight, the layers class is for you.
Do you cut bangs in the layering class?
Believe it, or not, in the looks I create, the bangs are actually the most advanced part of the entire haircut.. Because of this, they are not something I can quickly graze over. I feel cutting the hair around your face with a specific technique deserves it’s own class. The results of my careful and thoughtful instruction have been incredible. The layering was created as a sequel class. In this class I empower you to lift the crown layers, frame the bits on your sides, and remove tons of weight. If you want the full shebang, I would definitely consider doing both classes.
I’ve never cut my own hair! Is this class for beginners?
Yes! These classes were designed for people who have never cut their own hair. Hairstylists who have taken my classes often have to unlearn what they have been taught to create a similar aesthetic to mine. I have found it strangely simple to teach thousands of non-stylists to do their own. If you have been wanting my styles but can't seem to get it, you can do it yourself. You be the hands, and I am the guide.
Is your haircutting class a video? Can I watch it over and over?
You can watch it for one year, as many times as you want. I teach the classes live and then I have the videos edited for your use!
HAIR TYPES & STYLING
I don’t look good with bangs due to having a low forehead (or cowlick, or any concern) will your class work for me?
I promise you. I have heard this from everyone and I have yet to meet a person who cannot improve the hair that frames their face with my bangs class. I cover it all.
I want to take your class but bangs don’t look good on me, thoughts?
Everybody has bangs. It depends on whether they hit your chin, the graze your cheekbones, or they are softly sitting against your eyebrows. Bangs are simply the hair that lives above your hairline and frames the front of your face.
Will my at home haircut look good if I like to straighten my hair?
My technique is to celebrate natural texture, so I do not have an answer for you. I guess that will be up to you! I have a suspicion you will like your natural hair texture after the class.
I have had hair loss all on the top of my head can I still get a shag? Or bangs?
Yes! In fact it will make your hair look thicker!
Can I get a shag without the ends being skinny?
Yes yes yes! You can get volume with soft crown layers and petals carved in and still have your weight left on the bottom.
TOOLS
What tools do I need and where do I buy them?
To get the most out of this class, you will need a few tools:
- Spray bottle of water
- Fine tooth comb
- Feather razor (long or short is fine, I recommend purchasing through Jatai. This razor is incredibly common in the haircutting world and if you cannot get it shipped to where you live, you can find it at your local beauty store or online in your area. Just look up “Feather Plier guarded razor.”
Can I achieve the same look using your class with my scissors?
Nope, sorry. As much as people swear that scissors create the same softness, in my 30 years of hairdressing I have never seen that to be true.
I have super curly hair and I was told to never use a razor on it. Can you explain why you use a razor on curly hair?
Hair is hair. That is a misconception based on scraping the hair with the razor and not using tension. I cut every single one of my curly haircuts with a razor.
general FAQs
HAIRCUTS
How do I get an appointment with you in the Bay Area or in Los Angeles?
Currently, I am taking very few clients due to the fact that I am a full-time educator. If you would like to get a makeover at my Oakland salon please submit a current photograph where I can see your entire face and entire head, with no glasses and no hat. Please note I never cut hair that has been straightened with keratin in the last five years. In your photo, I need to be able to see your natural hair texture. Then, please let me know in one or two sentences what you are looking for. If we feel that it is a good fit you will hear back from us to set up an appointment. My haircut transformations in Oakland are $300 and are $500 in Los Angeles.
Do you have a waiting list?
I do not. If I have space to give you a transformation we will send you a calendar of appointments you can choose from in the near future.
How much do you charge for a haircut?
- Bangs and face-framing touch up: $100 in Oakland / $150 in LA
- Transformation or first-time haircut: $300 Oakland / $500 LA

Do razor cuts ruin your hair? I have been told they do.
No. A razor is simply a sharp tool that slices across the shaft of the hair. It’s the difference between a very sharp knife or a pair of scissors. Many people do not hold tension when cutting with a razor therefore they scratched the hair creating frizz. When using the razor properly it creates a clean and soft effect. Like the end of a paintbrush.

I’ve been a hairdresser for a long time, but I only use scissors. Can I still take your advanced haircutting classes?
